Stargazing & Astrophotography

NZ's largest International Dark Sky Reserve

Low light pollution across the whole basin means the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on most clear nights, year-round. Guided tours run from Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, with or without a telescope, and astrophotography workshops for anyone wanting to take the shot home.

Highlights

Mt John Observatory tours

Guided night-sky sessions above Lake Tekapo, run by the University of Canterbury's observatory.

Dark Sky Project

Astro-tourism tours and a dedicated astro-cafe/planetarium in Tekapo.

Self-guided viewing

Any clear, moonless night away from town lights works — no tour required.

Astrophotography workshops

Small-group sessions on shooting the night sky, run seasonally.
